The Book of Jonah · Episode I
The Prophetwho ran.
The word of Yahweh came to Jonah. Jonah went the other way — and the sea went after him. Every scene below is a real frame from our animated film.
The word of Yahweh came to Jonah: “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it.” Jonah arose — and ran the other way. Down to Joppa, where a ship stood bound for Tarshish. He paid the fare and stepped aboard. Jonah 1 : 1–3
Far from land, under an easy moon, the sailors asked their passenger about his God. “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.” They liked him. Jonah 1 : 9
Sleep would not come. The wake behind the ship glowed like a road on the water — pointing straight back the way he had run. Of every soul aboard, only Jonah knew what this ship was carrying. Jonah 1 : 3
But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up. Jonah 1 : 4
A storm that hunts.
The sailors were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. Seasoned men, praying like children. Jonah 1 : 5
The captain's idols toppled with every wave. And the one man whose God ruled the sea? He had gone down into the ship's belly — fast asleep. The shipmaster shook him: “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God!” Jonah 1 : 5–6
“Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots — Jonah 1 : 7
— and the lot fell on Jonah.
“Take me up, and throw me into the sea — for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.” They rowed hard for land, and could not. Then they lifted the prophet over the rail, and let him go. And the sea stopped. Jonah 1 : 12–15
He did not fight the water. “The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me.” And the deep received him — gently — with small lights. Jonah 2 : 5
And Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah. It had not come to end him. It had come to catch him. Jonah 1 : 17
And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. What happened inside the dark — the prayer from the depths, the fish's errand, and the great city waiting at the end of it — is another story.
What this story teaches
You can run. You can't be lost.
Jonah boarded a ship pointed the exact opposite way from his calling. The storm didn't chase a ship — it chased a man God refused to give up on.
"But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh." Jonah 1 : 3The storm was mercy.
Wind, lots, sea, fish — everything that stopped Jonah was aimed at turning him around, not finishing him off. The fish is a rescue, not a punishment.
"Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah." Jonah 1 : 17God sees the sailors too.
A crew of foreign seamen prayed, rowed and feared — and when the water went still around their ship, they worshiped. Nobody in this story is an extra.
"Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly." Jonah 1 : 16Before you surface
How well do you know the storm?
1. Where did God tell Jonah to go?
Nineveh — the great and violent city. Jonah bought passage to Tarshish, the far end of the known map.
2. What was Jonah doing while the storm broke the sea over the ship?
Fast asleep in the innermost part of the ship — the captain had to shake him awake to ask for his prayers.
3. How did the sailors learn who the storm had come for?
They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah — only then did he tell them who he was running from.
4. How long was Jonah in the belly of the fish?
Three days and three nights — long enough for the prayer that fills Jonah chapter 2.

Jonah 1
1Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
4But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
5Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
6So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
7They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
8Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
9He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”
10Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.
11Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
12He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
14Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”
15So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
16Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.
17Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 2
1Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.
2He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
3For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
